Five Below Issues Recall For Room2Room LED Iridescent Bear Lights Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 11, 2025) – Five Below has issued a recall for its Room2Room LED Iridescent Bear Lights because they can pose a fire and burn hazard.

The recall was issued on April 3, 2025. Around 29,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the power switch on the USB cord of the Room2Room LED Iridescent Bear Lights could overheat. This may lead the device to melt and pose a serious fire and burn hazard.

Five Below has received 28 reports of the USB cord overheating and melting. At least six people have sustained burns to their fingers.

There have also been two reports of property damage. The Room2Room LED Iridescent Bear Lights were manufactured initially in China and sold at Five Below stores nationwide.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products

Millions of people are injured every year in accidents involving consumer products. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2020, an estimated 28,535,000 people sought medical attention for an injury related to, but not necessarily caused by, a consumer product. This is a decrease of more than 7.7 million (21 percent) from the 2019 estimate. The 2020 age-adjusted rate of injury was 8.5 medically treated, consumer product-related injuries per 100 people in the U.S. resident population.” There are many reasons that a consumer product could pose a fire hazard.

  • Electrical Malfunction: A consumer product may have overloaded circuits or poor wiring that leads to overheating.
  • Components: A consumer product may have elements more prone to overheating, such as motors or lithium-ion batteries.
  • Poor Ventilation: A consumer product may have an inadequate ventilation system that fails to properly dissipate heat.

Companies that manufacture consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration how these products could perform several years or even decades down the line. If a consumer product has design defects that contribute to it overheating, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim.

In some cases, products must include child-resistant features to be safe. Consider, for example, Calles v. Scripto-Tokai Corp. A fire was started after a child used a cigarette lighter that lacked child-resistant features. The Illinois Supreme Court held that the lack of child-resistant features could render it unreasonably dangerous. They ultimately allowed the case to proceed to trial. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.

  • Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
  • The defective product in question should also be preserved for further examination.
  • It should be determined if the product involved was on any recall list.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

It could be hard to know where to begin after being injured by consumer products. Unlike being involved in a car accident, there isn’t an obvious next step in terms of contacting an insurance provider. Companies that manufacture consumer products will often do everything in their power to deny liability if their device injured someone. It is important for consumers to understand that they do have legal rights. Any person that is harmed by a product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
