Generac Portable Generators Recalled Over Injury and Fire Hazard

Generac Power Systems Issues Recall for Portable Generators (GP8000E, model G0077150) Over Serious Injury and Burn Hazards

What does “failure to warn” mean in product liability

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 1, 2026) – Generac Power Systems has issued a recall for its portable generators because they can pose a major injury or death risk.

The recall was issued on April 16, 2026. Roughly 149,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Generac Portable Generators have a major issue when gasoline is poured in. Fuel can leak from the carburetor, which poses a serious risk of injury or death from fire.

The manufacturer has received at least 114 reports of fuel leaks involving the generator. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Liability for Injuries Involving Consumer Products

Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. This is particularly important for any company that creates generators. There are many known safety issues with generators. They can create a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard. They can also pose a fire risk. There are several ways that a generator could potentially be defective.

  • A generator may have a defective CO sensor. The generator may also fail to warn consumers about the risk of CO poisoning.
  • A generator may have leaks that allow gasoline or even gas vapors to leak. This creates a real fire or explosion risk.
  • A generator may have faulty wiring or poor grounding, thereby creating an electrical hazard.
  • A generator may have an automatic shutoff failure. Safe generators should shut off if they are overheating or overloaded for some reason.

If a consumer product has defects that make it likely that a consumer will be injured, this could create the basis of a product liability claim. Product liability claims are typically pursued as a strict liability offense. In other words, a company can be liable if their product is defective, even if they exercise a great deal of care to prevent harm. A manufacturer could also be liable if they fail to warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with their products.

Steps to Take After Being Injured By a Consumer Product

Many people are injured in accidents involving generators each year. Many of these incidents involve people who are poisoned by CO. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “more than 400 people die each year in the United States from CO poisoning. About 92 of those deaths are linked to portable generators, according to CPSC’s latest report on Non-Fire Carbon Monoxide Deaths Associated with the Use of Consumer Products.” Certain measures should be taken after any person is injured by a consumer product.

  • All of the medical records related to the accident should be sought.
  • The product involved in the accident should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause additional harm.
  • It should be determined if the affected product was on any recall lists.
  • Victims should consider their legal options with an experienced attorney.

Being injured by a consumer product can be highly traumatic. Victims are often left with very serious injuries. In particular, burn injuries can cost a fortune to treat. Any person injured by a defective consumer product may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. A product liability attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
