Head Rush Technologies Recalled TRUBLUE Speed Auto Belay Devices Over Fall Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 31, 2024) – Head Rush Technologies has issued a recall for its TRUBLUE Speed Auto Belay Devices because they pose a serious risk to consumers.

The recall was issued on August 22, 2024. The issue with the devices is that the brake can fail to activate, which can create a fall hazard.

When the device is working properly, it is intended to enable climbers to safely descend during a speed climbing event. Around 220 of the devices were sold prior to the recall.

Head Rush Technologies received one report of a brake failure. The incident caused the user to fall, resulting in a broken ankle.

Liability For Defective Consumer Products

Many people are injured in climbing accidents every year. According to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, “Climbing accidents account for approximately 10% of all mountain sport-related accidents and men in their thirties and forties are mainly affected. Climbing accidents lead to minor injuries in the majority of cases, and the extremities are most commonly affected. In more severe trauma, injuries of the head and neck, chest and abdomen prevail.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to ensure that speed climbing gear is safe.

  • Companies should rigorously test their products in all the ways that they will likely be used and misused.
  • Companies should be compliant with all safety requirements set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Companies should issue recalls when they become aware that their products are defective.

Companies that create consumer goods have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. This begins when a product is first designed. If a piece of equipment has a design defect, this could form the basis of a strict liability claim. A company could also be liable if they fail to warn consumers about the non-obvious dangers of their products. Victims of climbing accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It can be hard to know where to begin after any climbing accident. These accidents can be particularly difficult when they are caused by defective products. Climbers must be able to trust their gear with their lives. But far too often, people are injured by equipment that is unsafe. It is important for accent victims to understand that they do have rights. Any person injured by defective climbing gear may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
