IcyBreeze Cooling Issues Recall for IcyBreeze Buddy Portable Misting Fans Because They Can Catch Fire

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (September 27, 2025) – IcyBreeze Buddy Portable Misting Fans have been recalled because the units can overheat and inadvertently catch fire.
The recall was issued on September 18, 2025. Roughly 22,600 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the misting fans can overheat as they are charging. This can potentially lead to them catching fire.
The firm that manufactures them has received several reports of the fans overheating. This led to two separate fires.
IcyBreeze Buddy Portable Misting Fans could be purchased on Amazon.
Liability for Fires Caused by Consumer Products
Companies that create fans and other consumer products must ensure that these devices are compliant with safety standards. This is particularly important for devices that contain lithium-ion batteries. Devices that contain lithium-ion batteries can easily catch fire if there are any defects with the batteries. What follows are just a few of the steps that should be taken to ensure that these devices are safe.
- Design and Engineering: Companies should ensure that they obtain all of their materials from reputable suppliers that meet international safety certifications.
- Thermal Management: Companies should build in safeguards with their consumer products that prevent overheating.
- Battery Management: Companies should integrate electronics that constantly monitor voltage to prevent overcharging.
If a product has design defects that cause it to catch fire, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is also possible that the manufacturer of a product could be liable if only certain units are defective. In certain cases, a company may be liable for an injury involving their product if they failed to warn about the obvious dangers they pose to consumers.
Proving Negligence and Product Liability in Court
Many people are injured in accidents involving consumer products each year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2024, 15.1 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from consumer products. Most of the injuries involve everyday products often assumed to be safe. Many of these injuries occur to our most vulnerable populations, older adults and young children.” There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any product liability case.
- The defendant sold the product that was used by the plaintiff.
- The defendant was the commercial seller of the product that caused harm.
- The plaintiff suffered an injury through the use of the product.
- The product was defective when it was sold to the plaintiff.
- The defect with the product was the actual and proximate cause of the injury sustained by the plaintiff.
Many product liability claims are based on strict liability. Under this standard, defendants are liable if the plaintiff demonstrates that a product was defective, even if they used care to make it safe. Any person injured by a defective consumer product may be able to pursue some measure of justice through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
