LG Electric Ranges Recalled Over Fire Hazard

LG Issues Recall for LG Range Model LDE4411 Due to Potential Fire Hazard

LG Electric Ranges Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (February 7, 2025) – LG has issued a recall for roughly 500,000 electric ranges (Model LDE4411) because they can pose a fire hazard.

The recall was issued on February 6, 2025. According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the front-mounted knobs on the LG electric ranges Model LDE4411 can be activated by accidental contact from people as well as pets.

The CSPC has reviewed at least 86 different reports of the front knobs accidentally being activated. This has led to an estimated 28 fires and property damage over $340,000.

At least 8 people have been injured from the fires, and three pets have tragically died. The LG electric ranges were manufactured in Mexico and Korea.

Prior to the recall, they could be purchased at various retailers, including Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Kitchen Ranges

Cooking accidents remain one of the leading causes of fires in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “Cooking caused an average of 158,400 reported home structure fires per year (44 percent of all reported home fires in the US). These fires resulted in an average of 470 civilian deaths (18 percent of all home fire deaths) and 4,150 civilian injuries (42 percent of all reported home fire injuries) annually.” Many of these fires are caused by electric ranges. There are a number of potential issues with an electric range that could cause a fire.

  • Electric ranges may have defective wiring that could lead to short circuits and start a fire.
  • Electric ranges may be accidentally activated if the knobs do not have proper locking mechanisms.
  • Electric ranges could cause a fire if any of the exposed coil burners come into contact with a flammable substance.

Companies that create electric ranges have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must comply with all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. To that end, companies need to rigorously test all of their products in all of the ways that they could likely be used and misused. If a product has a design defect that leads to an injury, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any fire involving an electric range.

  • A police report of the incident should be created.
  • Medical records related to the accident should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the range was on any recall list.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

Fires due to accidental activation on an electric range are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of design choices that prioritize profits over safety. For example, push-to-turn knobs are less likely to accidentally activate and lead to a fire. It is important that victims of electric range fires understand that they do have legal rights. They may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
