Machesney Park Consrtuction Accident Injured 3 Workers

MACHESNEY PARK, ILLINOIS (May 20, 2024) – Three workers were injured after a building being constructed suddenly collapsed at a Machesney Park construction site.

Winnebago County officials are saying that the accident took place on Monday. A building was under construction at a local manufacturing facility on North Alpine Road.

The building collapsed, and three workers were hit by falling debris. Several large pieces of construction equipment were also knocked over.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. Two workers were taken to the local hospital, and a third person refused treatment.

There was severe weather in the Chicago area when the accident took place. But it remains unclear if that may have contributed to the collapse.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Machesney Park Construction Accidents

Construction workers face a wide variety of hazards at their job sites. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Occupational struck-by incidents caused 150 deaths and 14,000 nonfatal construction sector injuries in 2020. This totaled $1.4 billion in workers compensation direct costs for non-fatal claims with more than 5 days away from work.” Construction companies should take a number of measures in order to protect workers from building collapses.

  • Construction companies should conduct a thorough site assessment, including an analysis of the soil.
  • Construction companies should work closely with qualified architects and engineers to design safe structures.
  • Construction companies should source materials from reputable suppliers.
  • Construction companies should develop and enforce safety policies.

When a worker is injured on the job, they will typically have recourse through worker’s compensation. Worker’s compensation is a no-fault insurance plan that can help a worker or their family after a serious accident. An injured worker may also be able to recover damages through a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from their employer contributed to an accident.

There are numerous potential sources of third-party liability for any construction accident. Construction projects typically involve a blend of companies that must work together. A general contractor could potentially be liable for a construction accident if a work site was in an unsafe condition. Victims of construction accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Organ damage

It can be hard to know where to begin after any construction accident. Victims are often left seriously injured and may need to take extensive time off of work. Many victims are left so seriously injured that they may never be able to return to work. In any situation where a person is injured at a construction site, it is always wise to seek the experienced guidance of a construction accident attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case free of charge and let you know what your legal options are.
