Tegu Issues Recall for Magnetic Floating Stackers Toys Model STA-BGY-801T (Rainbow) Because Children Can Be Harmed From Ingesting Small Magnets

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 9, 2025) – Tegu has issued a recall for its Magnetic Floating Stackers toys because they can pose a serious risk of injury or death if children ingest their small magnets.
The recall was issued on July 31, 2025. Roughly 22,850 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the magnetic floating stacker toys violate safety standards for toys that contain magnets. In particular, the magnets on the toys can loosen and detach.
This poses a serious risk that children will ingest the magnets. If this were to happen, the ingested magnets can attach to one another and become dangerously lodged in a child’s digestive system.
There is a possibility that this could result in serious injuries, including internal perforations, blocked intestines, blood poisoning and death.
Tegu has received 31 reports of the magnets separating from the toy stacker.
Safety Standards for Toys With Magnets
Accidents involving children ingesting small magnets are unfortunately all too common. Many of these accidents result in serious trauma. According to AAP News, “More than half of children’s hospital patients who had ingested magnets needed to be admitted, and about 10% had potentially life-threatening injuries, according to a new study.” Manufacturers must follow certain safety standards to prevent these types of accidents.
- Small Parts: According to 16 CFR Part 1501, any toy or children’s product that is intended for kids under 14 should not contain small parts that could potentially be choking hazards.
- Magnets: If a child’s toy does contain magnets, they must be too large to fit in a small part cylinder. Or they must have a magnetic flux of less than 50 kG² mm².
Adhering to safety standards is a critical component of preventing ingestion accidents from taking place. But far too often these regulations are ignored as companies chase growing profit margins. Another major issue is that toys can get imported into the United States from countries with less strict regulatory standards.
Liability for Accidents Involving Children’s Toys
Companies that create children’s toys have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that a child could potentially use and abuse their toys. If a company fails to abide by safety standards, this could form the basis of a product liability claim if a child is injured. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any prima facie case of product liability.
- The defendant sold the product that the plaintiff used.
- The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
- The plaintiff suffered an injury as a result of using the product.
- The product was defective at the time it was sold to the plaintiff.
- The defect with the product was the actual and proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injuries.
Product liability claims can be advanced on numerous legal theories. One of the most common is that a manufacturer failed to warn about the latent dangers of a product. In other words, a company knew or should have known that a product may cause harm and didn’t take sufficient action to alert consumers of the danger. The parent of any child injured by a defective toy may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
