Liability for Injuries Caused By Gym Equipment

Injuries involving gym equipment are actually quite common. According to Gym Master, “There were 409,224 injuries caused by exercise equipment in 2021. This represents an 8.3% increase from the previous year. These injuries ranged from mild strains to severe fractures and head injuries.” There are a number of common defects with gym equipment that could potentially cause injuries.

  • Gym equipment may have an adequate stability that leads to it falling over.
  • Gym equipment may have poor ergonomics that cause unnatural movements and may lead to strain.
  • Gym equipment may have faulty locking mechanisms that failed to keep weights in place during use.
  • Gym equipment may be incorrectly assembled, which can dramatically increase the odds of a catastrophic failure.

Companies that make gym equipment have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their equipment could potentially be used and misused. This is especially important considering that most home gym equipment requires user assembly. If a piece of gym equipment has design defects or insufficient warning labels about its dangers, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Faulty gym equipment could lead to numerous types of injuries.

  • Had trauma
  • Broken bones
  • Spinal injuries
  • Crush injuries

Many of the injuries involving gym equipment are actually preventable. They often involve equipment that fails to meet safety standards. Part of the problem is that much of the gym equipment that gets sold in the United States is designed and manufactured overseas in countries with different safety standards. It is important for victims to understand that they do have rights. Any person who is injured by gym equipment may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
