Liability for Palos Park Car Accidents
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Medically consulted injuries in motor-vehicle incidents totaled 5.1 million in 2022, and total motor-vehicle injury costs were estimated at $513.8 billion. Costs include wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor-vehicle property damage, and employer costs.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to any car accident.
- Speeding: Drivers are much more likely to lose control of their vehicle at higher speeds.
- Fatigue: Staying awake for only 18 hours can reduce a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely equal to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05%.
- Inclement Weather: Car accidents are substantially more likely to take place when road conditions are slick due to poor weather.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise a great deal of caution in order to avoid causing car accidents. They must slow down in order to avoid colliding with another vehicle in their lane of traffic. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that collides with a fixed object like a building. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident resulting in an injury.
- Accident victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation as early as possible.
- Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should be sought.
- The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin an investigation.
Car accidents are often one of the most difficult events that most people will go through in their lives. Victims will often need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be left with high medical bills. To make matters worse, drivers and their insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when someone is seriously injured. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek the skilled guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
