Todson Issues Recall for Nerf Barrage Bicycle Helmets Over Safety Violations and Injury Risk

Nerf Barrage Bicycle Helmets Recalled Over Injury Risk

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 30, 2024) – Nerf Barrage Bicycle Helmets have been recalled because they can pose a serious risk of head injury to users.

The recall was issued on November 21, 2024. Around 6,500 affected units were sold.

The helmets are a bright blue with orange accents all around. According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled helmets do not comply with requirements for the retention system.

It is also possible that the helmets can fail to protect the wearer in the event of a crash. The Nerf Barrage Bicycle Helmets were sold exclusively at Walmart.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Bicycle Helmets

Bicycle accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury for children. This is why helmets are so important. According to Accident Analysis & Prevention, “The use of bicycle helmets was found to reduce head injury by 48%, serious head injury by 60%, traumatic brain injury by 53%, face injury by 23%, and the total number of killed or seriously injured cyclists by 34%.” Unfortunately, bicycle helmets may malfunction for many different reasons.

  • Bicycle helmets may have material defects that compromise the structural integrity of the device. In particular, there could be air pockets in the EPS foam.
  • Bicycle helmets need strong bonding between the outer shell and the foam in order to be effective. Weak adhesion can lead to catastrophic failures.
  • Bicycle helmets may have ineffective straps that fail to secure the device to the user’s head. This could lead the helmet to come loose in the event of the crash.

Companies that create bicycle helmets have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must adhere to all federal safety regulations for children’s bicycle helmets. These helmets must have strap and buckle systems to ensure that they are secured to the child’s head. They must also not obstruct the rider’s field of vision. When a bicycle helmet has design flaws that contribute to injury, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of helmet failures tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Death
