OdorStop Boot and Shoe Dryers and Deodorizers Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (March 11, 2025) – OdorStop Boot and Shoe Dryers and Deodorizers have been recalled because they can inadvertently cause a fire.

They were recalled on February 20, 2025. Around 13,000 units were sold.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the heat switch can short-circuit and result in electrical arcing that may inadvertently lead to a fire.

The product is intended to dry and deodorize boots. There have been no reports of injuries at this time. Consumers could buy the OdorStop Boot and Shoe Dryers and Deodorizers at various retailers, including Amazon and Lowe’s online store.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products

Fires involving consumer products are all too common. Many of these fires involve cooking equipment. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Cooking equipment accounted for the largest percentage of fires. An estimated annual average of 165,600 cooking equipment-related fires from 2017 through 2019 accounted for 46.0 percent of the average annual estimate of total residential fires for the same period.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent their products from becoming fire hazards.

  • Companies may need to use fire-retardant materials that comply with all fire safety standards.
  • Companies should design certain products to have adequate thermal management systems.
  • Companies should implement safeguards in order to prevent overheating with their battery systems.

Every product manufacturer has a legal obligation to take action in order to prevent their products from becoming dangerous. They must ensure that all of their products comply with federal safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other agencies. If a product has a design defect that may contribute to a fire or injury, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. The company that made that product could be legally responsible for any resulting injuries or deaths. It is important that several measures are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.

  • It should be determined if the affected product was on any recall list.
  • Medical records related to any injuries should be collected.
  • The cause of the defect with the product should be determined.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

Injuries involving consumer products are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where certain products do not go through all of the rigorous safety testing that would be required. Sadly, though, companies often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their product injured someone. This is why it is so important that any accident involving a consumer product is thoroughly investigated. Victims of accidents involving consumer products may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
