Illinois State Police Investigating Farm Sprayer Tractor Accident Along Everett Road
CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS (June 21, 2024) – One person was injured in a Champaign car accident that involved a farm sprayer tractor and an SUV along Leverett Road.
Champaign County officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:41 a.m. on Friday. A large green farm sprayer tractor was involved in a collision with a white Hyundai SUV.
The force of the impact caused the SUV to receive major front-end damage. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help all of the victims.
At least one person left the scene in an ambulance. It remains unclear what may have led up to the crash. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Illinois Farm Tractor Accidents
Accidents involving farm tractors may seem like freak occurrences, but they are actually quite common. According to the National AG Safety Database, “Tractor overturns are the leading cause of fatal injuries on US farms, resulting in an average of about 130 deaths each year. 1 in 10 operators overturn a tractor in his or her lifetime.” There are a number of reasons why a large farm tractor can be dangerous on the roadway.
- Tractors can have large blind spots that obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
- Tractors have a high ground clearance, which can lead to underride collisions.
- Tractors can weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code(625 ILCS 5/11-709), “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Many collisions are due to drivers who make dangerous lane changes.
The company that owned a farm tractor could be liable in the event of a collision. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. For example, a farm tractor may have been transporting goods to a job site. It is important that certain steps are taken after any farm tractor accident.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- A thorough investigation should be conducted.
The vast majority of car accidents are preventable and involve some amount of driver negligence. This could include instances where drivers are distracted or simply traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. Any person who is injured in a collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
