Liability for McHenry County Semi-Truck Accidents
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in semi-truck accidents every year in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of reasons that semi trucks can be particularly dangerous.
- A fully loaded semi truck can weigh 80,000 pounds.
- Semi-trucks have a high center of gravity and are thus more susceptible to rollover collisions.
- A fully loaded semi-truck traveling at 65 mph can take the length of two football fields to come to a complete stop.
- Semi-trucks have large blind spots all around them that can obscure the presence of pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
Semi-truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise care in order to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the roadway. They must not travel at a speed greater than would be reasonable and safe given the prevailing road conditions. If a semi-truck driver fails to slow down in order to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Organ damage
- Lacerations
- PTSD
