Liability For Crest Hill Car Accidents

Accidents involving vehicles that drive into storefronts may seem like freak occurrences, but they are actually very common. Around 4,000 people are injured every year due to drivers that go into storefronts. Many of these collisions are due to drivers that are experiencing “pedal confusion.” Pedal confusion occurs when a driver mistakes the gas for the brakes. Victims of storefront collisions tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

A property owner could potentially be liable for accidents where a vehicle hits someone inside of a store. Pursuant to Illinois Civil Code (740 ILCS 130/1), property owners must maintain their property in a reasonably safe condition. For the most part, storefront collisions can be prevented when business owners install bollard posts. These rigid metal and concrete structures are able to protect pedestrians from errant drivers.
