Liability For Marion Truck Accidents

Semi-trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs and can be especially dangerous for those in passenger vehicles. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,014 people died in large truck crashes in 2020. Fifteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 68 percent were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 16 percent were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” There are a number of steps that truck drivers should take in order to avoid accidents.

  • Truck drivers should be well rested before heading out on the road.
  • Truck drivers should ideally plan their routes out ahead of time.
  • Truck drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

A number of semi-truck accidents are due to truck drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-902), any driver intending to turn left must first yield the right-of-way to any driver traveling from the opposite direction that is close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a semi-truck driver makes a dangerous left-turn in front of another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a semi-truck accident.

  • The truck driver’s work log should be examined.
  • The truck’s event data recorder should be reviewed.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.

Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries. Many people may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or months after an accident. It can be difficult to know where to begin after a truck accident. However, accident victims should know that they do have rights. They do have the ability to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim if that is what they choose.
