Liability For Cook County Semi-Truck Accidents

Trucks can be incredibly dangerous for those in smaller vehicles. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,764 people died in large truck crashes in 2022. Seventeen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 66% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 16% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” Several factors could contribute to truck accidents.

  • Truck accidents are more likely at intersections when truck drivers make left turns.
  • Truck accidents are more likely when trucks are illegally parked.
  • Truck accidents are more likely when truck drivers are distracted or fatigued.

Truck drivers are required to get a commercial license. They must exercise a great deal of care to avoid collisions. This extends to those periods when a truck driver is forced to park by the side of the road. When a truck driver must park on the side of the road, they should activate their hazards and may need to put out flares or reflective triangles to warn other drivers about their presence. Warning devices must be placed within ten minutes of an accident under certain conditions. If a truck driver  fails to follow safety procedures for parking or is illegally parked prior to a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Many of the injuries associated with truck accidents may not be immediately obvious for some time. Indeed, many victims are left with long-term psychological injuries, including PTSD. Sadly, though, truck companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability for collisions, especially if their vehicles were parked at the time. But the fact of the matter is that a truck company could face civil liability for accidents involving their parked vehicles. This is why it is so important to seek legal counsel after any such collision.
