CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (February 18, 2026)—One person has tragically died in a semi-truck accident on Chicago’s Far South Side along the Bishop Ford Freeway.

Cook County officials are saying that the accident took place around 1 AM on Sunday. A semi truck was involved in a collision with a Nissan SUV for undetermined reasons.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

Despite life-saving measures at the hospital, the driver of the SUV died due to their injuries. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Chicago Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise care to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the roadway. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, “No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.” There are many ways that a truck driver may have acted negligently prior to a collision.

  • A truck driver may have been focused on their cell phone or some other object.
  • A truck driver may have failed to scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.
  • A truck driver may have failed to use their phone to alert other drivers of their presence.
  • A truck driver may fail to perform periodic inspections of their vehicle to ensure it is in working order.

If the driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a passenger vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. Another common issue is that truck drivers may make unsafe changes into the path of other vehicles. Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a truck accident can extend beyond any specific driver deemed to be at fault. The company that a truck driver worked for could be vicariously liable for the collision.

Steps to Take After Chicago Semi-Truck Accidents

Trucks account for only a relatively small portion of the total vehicles on the roadway. But they’re involved in a disproportionate number of serious collisions. According to the NHTSA, “In 2022 there were 5,936 people killed in traffic crashes involving large trucks. This was a 2-percent increase from 5,821 in 2021. • Seventy percent of people killed in large-truck traffic crashes in 2022 were occupants of other vehicles.” Multiple actions should be taken after any semi-truck accident.

  • Victims should seek as thorough a medical evaluation as possible.
  • All of the medical records associated with the accident should be collected.
  • The police report created after the accident should be carefully reviewed.
  • Any victim or their family member should seek the guidance of an experienced truck accident attorney.

Truck accidents tend to be highly preventable. In many cases, truck companies will push their drivers to complete deliveries on unrealistic time schedules. This can lead to truck drivers adopting unsafe driving practices. The surviving family members of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
