Remington Hair Dryers Recalled Over Electrocution and Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 27, 2025) – Empower Brands has issued a recall for the Remington Hair Dryers because the devices pose a risk of serious injury or death from electrocution.

The recall was issued on August 14, 2025. Roughly 56,300 units were sold.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Remington Hair Dryers lack an immersion protection device. This could cause users to become electrocuted if the hairdryers become submerged in water while plugged in.

No injuries have been reported at this time. The Remington Hair Dryers were sold at numerous stores, including Walmart Marketplace, Target Marketplace, and Amazon.

They were initially manufactured in China.

Understanding Hair Dryer Electrocution Hazards

Electrocutions involving hairdryers may seem like a freak occurrence, but many people have been injured in these accidents. According to Standards & Engagement, “Since 1975, The National Electric Code (NEC) has required the installation of ground-fault circuit-interrupters (GFCIs) in new or renovated bathrooms, which has contributed to a 95% reduction in electrocutions caused by consumer products.” There are many reasons that these devices could accidentally become submerged in water.

  • A person could fall as they are blow-drying their hair.
  • A person could slip on water while they are walking in the bathroom and holding a hairdryer.
  • A hair dryer could fall into the bathtub as a person is taking a bath.

These events have happened numerous times and resulted in serious injury or death. This is why it is so important for hair dryers to have immersion protection devices that cut off the flow of electricity into the water. Prior to these requirements, 91 people died in electrocutions over a seven-year period. There could be civil liability in any case where a consumer is electrocuted by a hair dryer.

Liability for Electrocutions Involving Hair Dryers

Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. They must adhere to all industry safety standards. In particular, UL 859, the Standard for Household Electric Grooming Appliances requires that hairdryers have immersion protection devices. If a company fails to adhere to safety regulations, this could form the basis of a strict liability claim. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any prima facie case for product liability.

  • The defendant sold the product that the plaintiff used.
  • The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
  • The plaintiff sustained injury through the use of the product.
  • The product was defective when it was sold to the plaintiff.
  • The defect with the product was the actual and proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any injury involving a consumer product. In particular, electrocutions can cause traumatic injuries and alter the trajectory of a person’s life. Electrical injuries can permanently impair numerous physical and cognitive functions. These incidents can also cause major damage to various internal organs. Any person that is injured by a faulty consumer product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
