Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters Recalled After Discovery They Can Break Mid-Use, Thereby Posing Injury Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 30, 2024) – Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters have been recalled because they can pose a fall and injury hazard to consumers.
The recall was issued on November 21, 2024. Around 1,400 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the front fork of the KickScooters may break mid-use. This could cause riders to fall off and be seriously injured in the process.
Segway has received 31 reports of broken forks. This includes six reports of injuries. Victims have sustained fractures, cuts, bruises, and other trauma.
The Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters were manufactured in China.
Liability for Accidents Involving Scooters
Scooters have become increasingly popular as an everyday form of transportation. This has led to a sharp spike in the number of accidents. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “e-scooters continue to show increases in injuries, year-over-year, rising 22% in 2022 from 2021. Nearly half (46%) of all estimated e-bike injuries from 2017 to 2022 occurred in 2022 alone. Hoverboard injuries defied the upward trend, and decreased 26% from 2021 to 2022.” In addition to collisions, many of these accidents involve malfunctions with the scooter itself.
- A scooter may malfunction and crash due to issues with the hydraulic braking system.
- The front fork of a scooter could break mid-use if it was not welded properly.
- Wheel or tire problems with a scooter may lead the user to lose control.
- A sudden loss of power with a scooter battery could lead to erratic speed changes.
Companies that make scooters have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. To that end, they must abide by all safety regulations set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Companies must rigorously test products for all of the ways that they are likely to be used and misused. Both a designer and manufacturer of a product could face liability for a scooter accident. Victims of these incidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Dislocations
- Organ damage
There has been a rush of companies to create new scooters as the devices have become increasingly popular. It is common for companies to neglect important safety issues as they try to scale. With respect to scooters, this could include instances where certain parts of the device are not particularly well welded. If this happens, this device is more likely to fail at those critical spots. Any person injured in a scooter accident may have legal recourse through a personal injury claim.
