Sensio Issues Recall for Bella Pro Series Espresso Machines and Cooks Steam Espresso Machines Due to Burn and Laceration Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (March 31, 2025) – Sensio has issued a recall for its Bella Pro and Cooks Steam Espresso Machines because they can pose a burn and laceration risk.
The recall was issued on March 20, 2025. Roughly 12,300 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the brew cup handle may forcefully eject during use. This could cause the glass carafe to shatter and seriously injure users.
Sensio has received 18 reports of handles suddenly ejecting. This resulted in eight instances where a person was either burned or sustained a laceration injury.
The Sensio Bella Pro and Cooks Steam Espresso Machines were originally manufactured in China.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Injuries involving consumer products remain very common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2020, an estimated 28,535,000 people sought medical attention for an injury related to, but not necessarily caused by, a consumer product. This is a decrease of more than 7.7 million (21 percent) from the 2019 estimate. The 2020 age-adjusted rate of injury was 8.5 medically treated, consumer product-related injuries per 100 people in the U.S. resident population. The 2019 age-adjusted estimate was 10.9 per 100.” There are many different reasons that a consumer product could be dangerous.
- Design Flaws: A consumer product may have designed flaws that make it inherently unsafe to use, even when it’s used as intended.
- Manufacturing Defects: Any type of problem during the manufacturing process could make a consumer product potentially dangerous. For example, defective vehicle parts may make them more likely to fail mid-use.
- Choking Hazards: Children’s products could be particularly dangerous if they contain small parts that may be easily ingested by children.
- Fire Risks: There are literally billions of devices that use lithium-ion batteries. If these batteries do not adhere to safety standards, this could create a fire risk.
- Missing Warning Labels: Consumer products could be dangerous if they lack the necessary warning labels to alert consumers of potential hazards. For example, a medication could lack a warning label for known side effects.
Companies have a legal obligation to ensure that their consumer products are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could be used and misused. Part of making a safe product will require companies to conduct tests. A safe product should ideally hold up over time and be free of inherent defects. When a consumer product malfunctions, even when it is used as intended, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in a prima facie case of product liability.
- The defendant sold the product that a plaintiff used.
- The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
- The plaintiff suffered an injury during the use of the product.
- The item that the defendant sold was defective at the time of the sale.
- The defect was both the actual and proximate cause of the injury the plaintiff sustained.
It could be hard for many people to know where to begin if they’ve been injured by a consumer product. Unlike car accidents, negligence may not be completely straightforward. In many cases, consumers may not even realize that they have a claim that can be pursued. It is important for victims of these accidents to understand that they do have legal options. They may be able to receive compensation through a product liability claim.
