SMEG USA Recalls Refrigerators Over Risk Doors Can Fall Off and Injure Users
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 18, 2024) – SMEG USA has issued a recall for its line of refrigerators because they can pose a risk of injury to users.
The recall was issued on August 8, 2024 and about 900 units were sold. They come in a variety of different colors, including black, cream, pastel blue, pastel green, red and white.
The main issue with these refrigerators is that the door can detach and fall off. This poses a serious risk to users, especially children. SMEG USA has received nine reports of refrigerator doors coming off.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Refrigerator Accidents
Refrigerators can be deceptively dangerous. In the 40’s and 50’s, many children died after becoming entrapped in refrigerators and suffocating. In the modern day, most injuries involve people who are hit by falling refrigerators. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, around 1,100 people are injured by falling refrigerators every year. Companies should take a number of measures in order to avoid making unsafe products.
- Companies should follow all safety guidelines set by regulatory agencies.
- Companies should recall products that are determined to be unsafe.
- Companies should thoroughly test products in all of the ways that a product could be used and misused.
Every company has a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. When a company creates a product with design defects, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. Part of the reason that companies may create unsafe products is that they fail to imagine all of the situations where their products could cause harm. Victims of refrigerator accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured by a refrigerator. Victims may sustain life-altering injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. Sadly, though, companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their product injures someone. This is why it is so important to seek legal counsel as early as possible after being injured by a faulty product.
