Trane Recalls American Standard Gas/Electric Packaged Units Over Gas Leak and Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 17, 2025) – Trane and American Standard Gas/Electric Packaged Unit furnaces/air conditioners recalled over gas leak and fire hazard.
The recall was issued on July 3, 2025. Approximately 4790 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, valves on the Trane and American Standard Gas/Electric Packaged Units can unexpectedly open. This could allow gas to leak through and pose a potential fire hazard.
The firm has received one report of gas leaking from the Trane and American Standard Gas/Electric Packaged Units furnace/air conditioners.
Affected units were initially manufactured in Mexico. They were distributed nationwide from January 2024 through March 2025.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
Liability for Accidents Involving HVAC Units
Gas leaks remain one of the leading causes of home explosions in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “An NFPA report released in late 2018 found that, on average, natural gas ignites 4,200 home fires each year in the United States alone. According to the report, US fire departments respond to an average of 125,000 residential natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas leaks annually, an increase of about 25 percent compared to 2007.” Several factors could contribute to a gas explosion or fire.
- Faulty Gas Lines: A natural gas line may have leaks due to corrosion or poor maintenance.
- Poor Ventilation: Natural gas could build up in areas that have poor ventilation, including basements and attics.
- Faulty HVAC: A malfunctioning HVAC system could leak gas and cause an explosion.
Companies that manufacture consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. This is particularly important for companies that manufacture HVAC systems. A malfunctioning HVAC system could potentially leak gas and cause a deadly home explosion or fire. If an HVAC system has designed defects that contribute to an accident, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. Many different issues with an HVAC system could make it a fire hazard.
- Electrical Issues: An HVAC system may have electrical issues that could create an ignition source for a fire.
- Clogged Components: An HVAC system may allow for debris accumulation that leads to clogged components. This debris could ignite if exposed to heating coils.
- Improper Installation: An HVAC system may have been improperly installed near combustible materials like wood framing or insulation.
It can be difficult to know where to begin after any fire or injury caused by an HVAC system. The victims of these incidents are often unsure where to begin. Most people will simply write off these events as “freak occurrences.” But they may involve poorly designed HVAC systems. It is important for victims to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. This can help cover medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
