Car Hauler and Tractor-Trailer Truck Involved in Washington Park Collision on Interstate 64 That Injured Two People
WASHINGTON PARK, ILLINOIS (August 11, 2025) – Two people were injured when multiple trucks were involved in a Washington Park car accident along Interstate 64 by mile marker 6.
St. Clair County officials are saying that the collision took place on Monday evening. A car hauler reportedly struck the bridge and stopped in lanes of traffic before it was struck by a second tractor-trailer.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims. Two people were hospitalized in the collision, including one woman who was listed in critical condition.
The highway remained closed for several hours as police continued their investigation and the route was cleared.
Liability for Washington Park Truck Accidents
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collision. They must maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. Pursuant to 625 ILCS 5/11-601, drivers must operate their vehicle at a reasonable speed at all times. They must not operate their vehicle at a speed that would be unsafe given the prevailing traffic conditions and hazards on a roadway. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a fixed object, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several other factors could contribute to a truck accident.
- Driver Distraction: Many collisions are the result of a driver being distracted. They may be looking at their phones or reaching for an object that fell.
- Vehicle System Failures: Truck accidents may be the result of some type of malfunction with a truck or its component parts. For example, a tire may cause a truck to veer off the roadway.
- Driver Fatigue: Fatigue is another common contributing factor in truck accidents. Truck drivers are often pushed to work long hours and may naturally become fatigued.
Gathering evidence is a critical component of establishing who may have been at fault for any collision. Trucks are unique vehicles. Unlike most cars, it is common for them to have special recording devices known as event data recorders (EDRs). These devices function in much the same way that the black box on an airplane works. It can provide a great deal of insight into what may have caused any collision.
Third-Party Liability for Washington Park Truck Accidents
When commercial trucks are involved in a collision, liability could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. The employer that a truck driver worked for could be held responsible. As a general principle, employers in Illinois are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees–insofar as they were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Many other parties could be liable for a truck accident as well.
- Loading Companies: There are strict regulations with respect to how commercial trucks can be loaded. When trucks are overloaded or improperly loaded, this could contribute to a truck driver losing control. It could also establish liability on the part of the company responsible for loading the truck.
- Truck Manufacturers: The company that manufactured any truck could also be held responsible for what happened. Trucks are complex vehicles, and it is common for design defects with a truck or its component parts to contribute to accidents.
- Municipal Entities: In certain situations, municipal entities that create or maintain roads could be liable for a truck accident. Roadways must be maintained in a reasonably safe condition. If a defect on a public roadway contributed to a crash, the entity responsible for the road could be held liable.
Truck accidents can be extremely disruptive for a victim’s life. Involved parties are often left with high medical bills and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. To make things more difficult, insurance providers are virtually never willing to offer fair settlements to cover the damages related to a collision. This is where a truck accident attorney can be enormously helpful. They can take steps to ensure that the rights of accident victims are always taken into consideration.
