Two Injured In Fulton Truck Accident on Illinois Route 84 by Lock Road

FULTON, ILLINOIS (August 16, 2025) – At least two people were injured in a Fulton collision involving a MidAmerican Freightliner bucket truck on I-86 by Lock Road.

Whiteside County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:15 a.m. on Monday. A MidAmerican Freightliner bucket truck was heading northbound on Route 84 when it crossed into opposing lanes of traffic.

The truck then collided with a Kia and Buick Crossover. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims.

The driver of the Kia was airlifted to a hospital after the crash. The driver of the Buick was also transported to an area hospital.

Liability for Whiteside County Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license. They must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code § 11-701, drivers must operate their vehicles on the right side of the road with limited exceptions. If a driver collides with vehicles after entering opposing lanes of traffic, they are typically liable for any crash. These types of collisions may take place for many different reasons.

  • Driver Distraction: A truck driver may be distracted by their phone or some other device in their vehicle.
  • Speeding: Commercial trucks are difficult to operate in the best of circumstances. Truck drivers are much more likely to lose control of their vehicles at higher speeds.
  • Over Correction: Truck drivers occasionally find that their vehicle is drifting off the road. They may overcorrect and send their vehicle into opposing lanes of traffic.

The vast majority of head-on car accidents are completely preventable. They tend to involve situations where one or more traffic regulations are being violated. Unfortunately, truck drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never accept fault when there is a collision. This is why it is so important that these incidents are thoroughly investigated by an experienced truck accident attorney.

Additional Liable Parties After Truck Accidents

The company that employed any truck driver could potentially be held at fault for a collision. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees–insofar as those workers were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. However, many truck companies hire their drivers as “independent contractors” to limit legal exposure for accidents. There are some key differences between truck drivers that work as employees and independent contractors.

  • Control: Companies control the methods and schedule of employees. Independent contractors decide how and when to work.
  • Equipment: Companies provide and maintain equipment used by employees. Independent contractors drive and maintain their own trucks.
  • Work Performance: Companies hire employees to perform work on a regular basis. Independent contractors tend to be more short-term and project-based.

Not every truck accident is the direct result of negligence on the part of a truck driver. It is possible that a truck accident was due to poor vehicle maintenance. Faulty brakes, stuck accelerators, or malfunctioning steering systems could also cause a truck driver to lose control of their vehicle.
