Liability For Edwardsville Car Accidents

Police officers have very dangerous jobs and are often injured in car accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “In the last 10 years, on average, an officer per week has been killed on our nation’s roads (2011-2020 = 50 deaths per year). Most years, motor vehicle-related incidents — including crashes and being struck by moving vehicles while on foot — are the main cause of death for officers.” There are a number of steps that every driver should take to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should slow down when approaching emergency vehicles.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
  • Drivers should maintain a safe distance with all vehicles ahead of them.

Scott’s Law requires all people approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing warning lights to slow down, drive with caution and move over to another lane. When a driver fails to slow down and rear-ends an emergency vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.

If a pickup truck driver was working at the time of a collision, the company that they were working for could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees insofar as those employees  were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It can be hard to know where to begin after any car accident. However, it is important for accident victims to know that they do have rights. Any person that is injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the bills that can come with a car accident.
