Investigation Underway After Two Jet Skis Collided on Gages Lake Over Labor Day in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS (November 6, 2025) – Two people were injured in a Lake County jet ski accident as they were riding on Gages Lake.
Lake County officials are saying that the accident took place on Labor Day. A 21-year-old was riding a jet ski when the machine slowed after its “no wake mode” was activated.
The operator of a second jet ski crashed into the back of the first jet ski. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims.
The 21-year-old and his passenger were both hospitalized to receive treatment. A full investigation into the jet ski accident on Gages Lake remains ongoing.
Liability for Lake County Jet Ski Accidents
Jet ski operators are expected to operate with due care to avoid colliding with boats, people in the water, and other jet skis. This necessitates that they operate their watercraft at a safe speed at all times. They must maintain a safe distance with any other vessel around them. If a jet ski operator fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Many different factors could contribute to a jet ski accident.
- Jet ski accidents are much more likely when people are speeding.
- Jet ski accidents tend to involve younger operators with less experience.
- Jet ski accidents are more likely to happen during adverse weather conditions.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous liable parties for any jet ski accident. This includes the company that rented or leased a jet ski. They could be held liable for a crash under the theory of negligent entrustment. For example, a jet ski operator may have been visibly intoxicated and still permitted to rent a jet ski.
Steps to Take After Jet Ski Accidents
Accidents involving jet skis are much more common than many people realize. According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, “During 2018–2020, 1,508 deaths occurred involving injuries from recreational and nonrecreational use of watercraft. The percentage of deaths each month ranged from 3.0% in December to 16.6% in July. Most deaths (68.6%) occurred during May–September.” Victims of jet ski accidents should take certain steps to protect their legal rights.
- It is important that victims of jet ski accidents seek a thorough medical evaluation.
- The coast guard should be called to the scene so that they can begin an investigation.
- Any person injured in a jet ski accident should contact an experienced personal injury attorney.
Jet ski accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where operators are inexperienced. It is important that the victims understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. A personal injury attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
