VESTA.DS Issues Recall for the VST Brand Tankless Water Heaters Because They Pose a Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Death

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (October 25, 2025) – VST Brand Tankless Water Heaters have been recalled because they can pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning to users.
The recall was issued on October 16, 2025. Roughly 36,700 units were sold.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the exhaust duct on the product can crack. This can allow carbon monoxide to escape and leak into a person’s home.
Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide poses a risk of serious injury and death. The firm has received a total of 33 reports of the ducts cracking and fumes leaking out.
There are no reports of injuries at this time.
Liability for Injuries Involving Tankless Water Heaters
Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the likely ways that their product could malfunction. Companies must be particularly cautious if their product has the potential to leak carbon monoxide. Manufacturers should take several actions to prevent carbon monoxide leaks.
- Engineering: Companies should use fully enclosed combustion systems that totally separate the exhaust from the intake.
- Testing: Companies should rigorously test their products in all of the ways that they are likely to be used and even misused.
- Compliance: Companies should comply with all safety standards and regulations.
- Warnings: Companies should use clear warnings to alert consumers about the potential of CO poisoning.
If a product has design defects that cause CO to leak out and injure consumers, this may be indicative of a design defect. Design defects could help form the basis of a product liability claim. A product liability claim may also be possible if a company fails to warn consumers about the latent dangers associated with their product. For example, a manufacturer may need to warn consumers that certain products need to be in well-ventilated rooms to avoid the risk of CO buildup.
Steps to Take After Carbon Monoxide Injuries
Carbon monoxide leaks are a major cause of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Everyone is at risk for CO poisoning. Infants, the elderly, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or breathing problems are more likely to get sick from CO. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning not linked to fires, more than 100,000 visit an emergency department, and more than 14,000 are hospitalized.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any instance of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Medical Attention: Victims should seek medical attention as early as possible. Many of the symptoms of CO poisoning will not be immediately obvious.
- Evidence Preservation: The device involved in the CO poisoning should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause additional harm.
- Legal Review: Any person impacted by carbon monoxide poisoning should seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
It can be difficult to know where to begin after being injured by a consumer product. Victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be left with high medical bills. The companies responsible for building the products that cause injuries will almost never accept responsibility if someone is injured. This is why it is so important for victims to seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
