Woman Injured In Chicago Attack On South Side CTA Red Line

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (October 4, 2024) – A woman was injured in an attack on a South Side CTA Red Line platform at the 95th/Dan Ryan Station in Roseland.

Cook County officials are saying that a 23-year-old suspect allegedly attacked a 31-year-old woman. The assailant may have been part of a group of people.

During the fight, the victim sustained an injury to her shoulder. She was transported to Christ Hospital in order to receive care.

The offenders fled on foot, though one suspect was later apprehended. A full investigation into the South Side CTA Red Line platform attack remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Chicago Train Station Assaults

Assaults involving Chicago Transit Authority passengers remain all too common. According to WBEZ Chicago, “The number of violent crime victimizations per CTA passenger trip has more than tripled since 2015, according to the analysis. Violent crimes on buses, trains and other CTA properties during this year’s first eight months totaled 656.” Subway stations should take a number of measures in order to prevent assaults.

  • Visible Presence: The CTA may need to deploy police officers or private security to deter crime.
  • Surveillance Systems: The CTA should install high-definition cameras with real-time monitoring to deter crime.
  • Partnerships: The CTA should collaborate with mental health programs and homeless outreach programs to assist people before they are likely to commit crimes.

Depending on the facts of any case, the Chicago Transit Authority could face liability for any instance where a subway passenger is attacked. Pursuant to Illinois Civil Code 740 ILCS 130/2, property owners have a duty to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This includes taking steps to protect passengers from violent crime. If the CTA is aware of a history of assaults at a certain location, they will need to take action. A number of steps should be taken if a passenger is injured in an assault.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any assault at a train station. Even if a victim is able to completely heal physically from their injuries, they often must contend with long-term psychological trauma. Sadly, though, the CTA will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if a passenger is injured in an attack. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. They may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
