Liability In Round Lake Car Accidents
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “more than 32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes. In 2013, the US crash death rate was more than twice the average of other high-income countries.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident.
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Inclement weather
- Poor road conditions
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Many accidents are due to drivers that are speeding. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625, no person shall operate a motor vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends another vehicle in their own lane. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
It is important that there is a thorough investigation following any accident. Skid marks in the roadway can help indicate if a driver ever attempted to stop. Most intersections are also covered by surveillance footage. Unfortunately, though, drivers will often fight hard to deny liability for any collision. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved.
