Liability For Cook County CTA Bus Accidents
Buses are typically very safe. Still, many people are injured or killed every year in accidents involving commercial buses. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Bus drivers should take several measures in order to avoid collisions.
- Bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns on the roadway.
- Bus drivers should slow down in areas with heavy traffic.
- Bus drivers should always use their turn signals to alert other drivers of their intentions.
Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, no person shall operate their vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
A fully loaded bus can weigh tens of thousands of pounds. Even a low-impact collision can be very dangerous. Victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for some time. This is why it is crucial for victims to seek medical aid as early as possible. After a medical evaluation, victims should strongly consider seeking legal support. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek aid through a bodily injury claim.
