19 Injured In Round Lake Jail Transport Van Accident

ROUND LAKE, ILLINOIS (December 19, 2024) – At least 19 people were injured in a Round Lake car accident near the intersection of Illinois Route 120 and Hainesville Road.

McHenry County officials are saying that the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A van was transporting inmates from Lake County Jail to McHenry County Jail.

It was involved in a collision with an SUV. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the inmates. Both drivers were injured in addition to 17 passengers.

At least two of the victims were seriously injured in the crash. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for McHenry County Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death. According to the NHTSA, “An estimated 18,720 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, a decrease of about 3.2% as compared to 19,330 fatalities projected to have occurred in the first half of 2023. Fatalities declined in both the first and second quarters of 2024.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to motor vehicle collisions.

  • Car accidents are more likely to happen during periods of inclement weather.
  • A large portion of collisions involve drivers making left turns. In fact, left-turn collisions are ten times more likely than collisions involving right turns at intersections.
  • Speeding is one of the leading causes of car accidents. What many drivers don’t realize is that even driving the speed limit can be dangerous given certain conditions.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting other vehicles. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, no person shall operate their vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.

  • A police report should be created.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Victims should seek medical treatment.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any collision. A county could be liable if they operated or controlled a vehicle involved in a crash. Generally speaking, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their employers – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Any person injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
