72-Year-Old Man Killed In Chicago Pickup Truck Accident on South DuSable Lake Shore Drive

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 9, 2025) – A 72-year-old man has tragically died in a Chicago pedestrian accident by the intersection of DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Roosevelt Road.

Cook County officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:09 a.m. on Monday. A pedestrian was standing in the median when he was hit by a 26-year-old man driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

No citations were issued immediately after the collision. The cause of the Chicago pedestrian accident on DuSable Lake Shore Drive remains ongoing.

Liability for Cook County Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are uniquely vulnerable to the hazards posed by motor vehicles. They lack the protection of cars and are more likely to be overlooked by drivers. According to the City of Chicago, “68% of Chicago traffic deaths involved drivers traveling at high speeds. Nearly half of pedestrians killed in the city are hit by an SUV or larger vehicle.” Drivers should take several measures to avoid colliding with pedestrians in the roadway.

  • Slow Down: Drivers should slow down at intersections and areas where pedestrians are likely to congregate.
  • Left Turns: Drivers should be particularly cautious as they are making left turns. Left turns are involved in nearly 10 times more collisions than right turns at intersections.
  • Driver Intoxication: Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other potentially intoxicating substances. Even prescriptions can substantially impair  a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.

Drivers must take reasonable measures to avoid hitting pedestrians. This is true even when a pedestrian is outside of a lawfully marked crosswalk. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horns when necessary and exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person.

Liability for a pedestrian accident may extend beyond the driver that caused a collision. In particular, many pedestrian collisions involve vehicles that are being used for commercial purposes. This is particularly common with vans and pickup trucks. If the driver of one of these vehicles was working at the time of a crash, their employer could be responsible. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Surveillance: Surveillance footage that captured the accident should be sought.
  • Police Report: The police report related to the accident should be examined and reviewed for errors.
  • Driver: The nature and purpose of a driver’s actions leading up to a crash should be determined.

Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are either speeding or not adequately scanning the road ahead of them. This is particularly common when accidents take place at night. Sadly, though, drivers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they are involved in a fatal collision. The family of any pedestrian that died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
