ADDISON, ILLINOIS (May 14, 2026) – A 50-year-old man identified as Adolfo Carrillo has been charged in connection with a deadly two-vehicle car accident along Interstate 355 and Addison.
DuPage County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:00 PM on May 1. Adolfo Carrillo was driving a gray Ford pickup truck when he was involved in a collision with a gray Lexus SUV.
The Ford was apparently attempting to merge onto I-355 when it struck the side of the Lexus. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.
Sadly, a 65-year-old woman died due to the severe nature of her injuries. Two passengers in the Lexus were also taken to the hospital to receive treatment.
Authorities have since charged Adolfo Carrillo on suspicion of DUI. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Liability for Addison DUI Car Accidents
All drivers in Illinois have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid causing collisions. Drivers must be particularly cautious when attempting to change lanes. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-709, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Several factors could contribute to any car accident.
- Speed: Drivers are substantially more likely to be involved in collisions if they’re traveling at excessive speeds.
- Intoxication: A large portion of fatal accidents involve drivers who were intoxicated.
- Blind Spots: Many collisions involve drivers that failed to check their blind spots before turning or making lane changes.
If a driver moves into the path of another vehicle prior to a collision, this could serve as evidence of negligence. If a driver is intoxicated while causing an accident, they could also face criminal liability for their actions. What many drivers do not realize is that a variety of substances besides alcohol can substantially impair their ability to operate a vehicle safely. Liability for a collision could also extend beyond any specific driver determined to be at fault. This is particularly true if a pickup truck or other vehicle was being used for some type of commercial purpose when a crash took place.
Steps to Take After Addison DUI Car Accidents
Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of preventable car accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “In 2022, 13,524 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for 32% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.” Victims of DUI car accidents should take a number of actions to protect their legal rights.
- Police Report: The police report for the accident should be collected and carefully reviewed.
- Medical Records: All of the medical records associated with a collision should be sought.
- Legal Review: Any person harmed in a DUI collision should seek an independent review of the collision by a team experienced in accident reconstruction.
It can be hard to know what to do after being harmed in a DUI collision. Negligent drivers and their insurance providers almost never accept responsibility for what happens. It is important that victims understand that they do have legal rights. They’re able to seek some measure of accountability and transparency through civil action. This right also extends to the surviving family members of any person killed due to the negligent actions of a drunk driver.
