Bayer Issues Recall for Afrin Original Nasal Spray Bottles Due to Lack of Child-Resistant Packaging
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 15, 2026) – Bayer issued a recall for Afrin Original Nasal Spray Bottles because they can pose a serious injury or illness risk to young children.
The recall was issued on April 30, 2026. Roughly 786,000 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The 6ml Afrin Original Nasal Spray Bottles must be in child-resistant packaging or meet certain labeling requirements.
This is required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Children are at serious risk of being injured or killed if they ingest the contents of the nasal spray.
There are no reports of injuries at this time. The Afrin Original Nasal Spray Bottles were sold at a variety of different retailers, including convenience stores across the nation.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Products
Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. This is particularly important for drug manufacturers. Over-the-counter medications should typically be in child-resistant packaging, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. There are many ways that companies can help prevent accidental child poisoning.
- Hard Covers: Medications should be coded in tamperproof packaging that makes it difficult to access the bottle in the first place.
- Push Bottles: Medications should be in bottles that require the user to push and twist to open.
- Warnings: Medications should have warnings to alert parents of the potential dangers that those medications pose to young children.
If a manufacturer fails to abide by federal safety standards, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Companies must abide by all federal safety standards and properly warn consumers about the reasonably foreseeable dangers associated with the use of their products. This necessitates that they warn parents about the potential dangers to children. When a product lacks adequate warning labels, the manufacturer could face liability through a failure-to-warn claim.
Steps to Take After Being Injured by Defective Products
Accidental poisoning remains one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death for young children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2022, staff found 2,387 cases involving unintentional pediatric poisonings for children younger than age 5 in the NEISS.6 Based on these cases, staff computed a national estimate of 68,600 ED-treated injuries, with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 15.82 percent.” Victims of dangerous consumer products should take certain actions to protect their rights.
- All of the medical records related to the injury should be sought.
- The product that caused injury should be stored in a secure location.
- It should be determined if the defective product was on any recall lists.
- Victims should contact an experienced product liability attorney.
Child poisoning is often highly preventable. They tend to involve companies that are not adhering to safety regulations. This may be due to their lack of knowledge of the relevant regulations. But for too many cases, it is a consequence of cost-cutting measures. The family of any child harmed by an improperly packaged medication may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
