AirJet and HydroJet Spa Pumps by Bestway Recalled Because They Can Pose Fire Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (October 12, 2024) – AirJet and HydroJet Spa Pumps from Bestway were recalled because they can become a fire hazard during use.
The recall was issued on September 12, 2024. Around 866,00 units were sold. According to the notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps may overheat during use.
This can lead to the plastic housing unit catching fire. There have been at least three fires involving the spa pumps.
One of those fires resulted in a fatality. Another seven incidents involving the AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps remain under investigation.
The units were sold with SaluSpa, Coleman, and Hydro-Force span liners. They could be purchased online at various retailers, including Bestway USA, Amazon, Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, QVC, RuralKing and Spreetail.
Liability For Fires Caused By Consumer Products
Fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 343,100 home structure fires per year. These fires caused an annual average of 2,610 civilian deaths; 11,090 civilian fire injuries; and $7.6 billion in direct property damage.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent their products from becoming fire hazards.
- Companies should use fire-resistant materials, especially for components that generate heat.
- Companies should comply with all standards from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies.
- Companies should integrate proper thermal management systems to properly dissipate heat.
All companies have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that consumers may use (and misuse) their products. They must also provide clear warning labels about the dangers associated with the use of their products. If a company fails to design or manufacture a product that meets safety requirements, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after an injury involving a consumer product.
- It should be determined if the product involved was part of any recall.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- A police report may need to be created.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
It can be hard to know what to do after any residential fire. These incidents can leave victims with serious and lasting injuries. Sadly, though, companies that make spa pumps and other consumer products will nearly always deny liability if their device causes a home fire. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek legal counsel as early as possible. Any person injured in a fire caused by a consumer product may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
