Baseus Portable Chargers Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 16, 2025) – Baseus Portable Chargers have been recalled because they can pose a risk of serious injury and fire.

The recall was issued on May 1, 2025. Roughly 55,380 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the lithium-ion batteries in the devices may overheat while charging. This could lead them to catch fire and burn users in the process.

Shenzhen Baseus Technology has received 72 incident reports involving the portable chargers. In 72 of those cases, overheating led the devices to bulge.

These accidents resulted in three instances of property damage. The Baseus Portable Chargers were sold on Amazon, AliExpress, Walmart, Baseus’ online store.

Liability for Accidents Involving Portable Chargers

Fires involving devices with lithium batteries remain quite common. According to USA Fire Protection, “at least 25,000 fire or overheating incidents in lithium-ion batteries occurred in a five-year period. Furthermore, heat, smoke, toxic gases, and the potential for explosions are all dangers associated with lithium-ion battery fires.” Many different defects could potentially contribute to a portable charger catching fire.

  • Safety Features: Portable chargers may lack key safety features that prevent them from overcharging.
  • Physical Damage: Any type of damage to the lithium-ion cells with a portable charger may result in the device overheating.
  • Poor Material Choice: The components of a portable charger may be unsuitable or of a poor quality.

Companies that create portable chargers have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. These devices are known to be potential fire hazards in certain conditions. Manufacturers must take into consideration all of the ways that their products could be used and even misused. If any portable charger has design defects that lead it to become a fire hazard, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. It is crucial that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a portable charger.

  • All medical records related to the injury should be collected.
  • It should be determined if the affected product was on any recall list.
  • The product that may have been defective should be stored in a safe place where it is not likely to cause additional harm.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

The vast majority of accidents involving portable chargers are completely preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies choose to cut corners in terms of safety standards. This could include instances where companies failed to test their products or ensure that they meet design standards. Any person that is injured by a defective portable charger may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
