Liability For Cook County Bicycle Accidents

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in bicycle accidents every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Nearly 1,000 bicyclists die and over 130,000 are injured in crashes that occur on roads in the United States every year. Bicycle trips make up 1% of all trips in the United States.” There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to avoid hitting pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down in areas where pedestrians and cyclists travel.
  • Drivers should use their horns to alert pedestrians and cyclists of their presence.

All drivers must take precautions in order to avoid harming cyclists on the roadway. Many bicycle collisions involve drivers who were speeding. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-601), no driver shall operate a vehicle at a speed greater than what is reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a cyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bicycle accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Bicycle accidents are often completely preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not paying enough attention to the road ahead of them. Any person who is injured in a bicycle accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A bicycle accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
