BISSELL Recalls Over 3 Million Steam Shot Deluxe Handheld Steam Cleaners Over Potential Burn Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 23, 2024) – BISSELL has issued a recall for more than 3 million of its Seam Shot Deluxe steam cleaners because they pose a burn hazard.
The recall was issued on July 18, 2024 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 3.2 million of the BISSELL Seam Shot cleaners were sold, including about 355,000 in Canada.
The recalled devices expel a hot stream of water or steam. This water or steam can hit users and leave them seriously injured. Affected devices were in the model series 39N7 and 2994.
The devices come in a variety of colors, including green, pink, blue, orange, white, black, purple, and red. BISSELL has indicated that they have received 157 reports of burn injuries so far.
Liability For Consumer Products Causing Burn Injuries
Burn injuries involving consumer products remain alarmingly common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2021 emergency rooms nationwide treated an estimated 193,450 burn injuries involving many types of consumer products, from kitchen and cooking products to fireworks and space heaters.” Companies that make consumer goods should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.
- Companies should conduct a risk assessment of all of their products.
- Companies should either meet or exceed all safety standards.
- Companies should closely monitor product performance and safety once a product is on the market.
All companies that make products for the general public must take measures in order to prevent injuries. They must take into consideration all of the plausible ways that their product could be used or misused. If a company fails to warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with the use of their products, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.
- Victims should seek medical attention as early as possible.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- It should be determined if the product was part of any recall.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
Companies must keep in mind that consumers will utilize their devices in many different ways. They must work around this and ensure that their products are reasonably safe in a variety of different settings. They should also provide clear warnings and instructions. But far too often, this does not take place. Any person who is injured by a steam cleaner or other consumer product may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
