CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 28, 2024) – Southern Telecom has issued a recall of the Brookstone TurboVac Handheld Rechargeable Vacuums because they pose a fire hazard.
The vacuums were sold exclusively at Belk. About 10,600 units were sold, and they were recalled on June 27, 2024.
The problem with the Brookstone TurboVac Handheld Rechargeable Vacuums is that they can short circuit during or after their battery is charged.
Belk has said that they’ve received two reports of serious fires caused by the vacuums.
Liability For Fires Caused By Rechargeable Vacuums
Fires caused by consumer goods may seem like freak occurrences, but they are unfortunately quite common. Most of these fires involve products with lithium-ion batteries. According to CBS News, “Last year, there were more than 200 fires blamed on lithium-ion batteries in New York City. Since 2019 the city recorded 326 injuries related to these types of fires, while San Francisco recorded 7 in the same time period.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent their products from becoming fire hazards.
- Companies should implement stringent design standards to ensure that their products are free of design defects.
- Companies should adhere to industry-specific regulations and standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) and other regulatory agencies.
- Companies should provide clear and comprehensive instructions about how their products can be used.
All companies that manufacture consumer goods have a legal obligation to make sure that their products are reasonably safe. Companies are liable for the design, manufacturing, and marketing defects associated with their products. A marketing defect occurs when a company fails to give consumers clear instructions. This could also include instances when a company fails to warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with their products. Victims of fires caused by faulty products may suffer very serious injuries.
- Organ damage
- Lung damage
- Burn injuries
- Nerve damage
- Deaths
Companies will often take shortcuts in order to make their products as cheap as possible. But this can often lead to serious safety lapses. For example, companies may choose to use cheaper battery components that are more prone to failure. Consumers should not have dangerous products foisted upon them by companies that are violating safety regulations. Any person who is injured in a residential fire caused by a dangerous product may be able to seek some degree of justice through a civil claim.
