Oliva Cigars Recalled Promotional Cigar Slim Lighters Over Violations of Federal Regulations
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (November 3, 2024) – A series of promotional lighters identified as Cigar Slim Lighters have been recalled because they can pose fire and burn hazards to users.
The recall was issued on October 17, 2024. Around 60,000 affected units were sold.
The lighters were part of a promotional series and had numerous brands on the front, including Nub, Serie V, Cain, and Oliva. One of the problems with the lighters is that they lack child safety features.
No incidents have been reported at this time.
Liability For Injuries Caused By Lighters
Far too many people are killed or injured in preventable fires every year. According to the United States Fire Administration, “Together, lighters and matches ignited nearly 9% of all fires where the heat source for the fires was known. In 2002, there were approximately 144,000 lighter− or match−ignited fires. These fires killed an estimated 321 people, injured 1,877 people, and caused $470 million in property loss.” Many of these fires were caused by children. This is why it is so important that lighters have child safety features.
- Some lighters should have safety caps.
- Lighters should have increased ignition pressure.
- Lighters should have a child-resistant lever.
- Lighters should have automatic shut-off features.
Companies that create lighters have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe and comply with all federal safety standards. When a company creates a product that lacks needed safety features, this could be understood as a design defect and form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a potentially defective product.
- Medical records related to the injury should be collected.
- It should be determined if the affected product was part of a recall.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
The vast majority of injuries caused by lighters and other products are preventable. They tend to involve companies that are making shortcuts in terms of safety features. This may be due to ignorance of safety standards. Or it may involve companies that are trying to save money. It is important that victims of unsafe products understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
