The recall was issued on October 17, 2024. Around 89,500 units were sold. The main problem with the devices is that flames can shoot out while users are pouring alcohol into the device.
This burning alcohol can propel out and onto those nearby. There have been 19 reports of burn injuries. At least six of the victims required surgery.
Liability For Burn Injuries Caused By Consumer Products
Burn injuries involving consumer products remain incredibly common in the United States. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2021 emergency rooms nationwide treated an estimated 193,450 burn injuries involving many types of consumer products, from kitchen and cooking products to fireworks and space heaters.” There are a number of common products that could lead to burn hazards.
- Candles
- Cooking equipment
- Fire pits
- Space heaters
- Appliances
Companies have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. They must adhere to all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Whenever a company is making a product, they must take into consideration all of the ways that it could be used and even misused. If a company makes a product that is unreasonably dangerous or lacks common safety features, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any fire involving a consumer product.
- A police report should be created.
- Medical records of injuries should be collected.
- It should be determined if the device involved was part of a recall list.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
It can be hard to know where to begin after being burned by a consumer product. These injuries can be incredibly painful and costly to treat. Many victims will need multiple skin grafts. Sadly, though, companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their product injures someone. This is why it is so important for victims to seek legal advice as early as possible.
