Over 1 Million Conair Metal Wire Bristle Grill Brushes Recalled Due to Serious Ingestion Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 8, 2026) – Conair metal wire grill brushes have been recalled because they can pose a major risk of injury to consumers.
The recall was issued on July 2, 2026. Over 1.7 million units were sold prior to the recall.
The metal wire bristle grill brushes are intended to help clean grills after a cooking session. However, the wire bristles on the grill can become dislodged during use.
This creates a real risk that they could become trapped in food and therefore be unintentionally ingested. If a person were to ingest the metal wire bristles, it could lead to serious internal injuries that may necessitate surgery.
The manufacturer is aware of at least 54 incidents where the wire bristles detached from the brush. This includes three instances where consumers reportedly swallowed the metal bristles and required medical treatment.
What follows are some of the grill brushes included in the recall.
- Triple Bristle Grill Cleaning Brush
- 4-in-1 Grill Cleaning Brush with Stainless Steel Wire Bristles
- BBQ Grill Cleaning Brush and Scraper, 16.5″ Stainless Steel
- Triple Bristle Grill Brush SS Bristles
- 2-in-1 Grill Brush Bristle/Coil
- Pizza Stone Cleaning Brush
- Wood Grill Cleaning Brush (18.5″ with Pakka Wood Handle)
- Steam Clean Grill Brush
The grill brushes were originally manufactured in China and sold at various retail stores, including TJ Maxx and Ross. They were also sold online at Amazon.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Product manufacturers can be held liable for injuries caused by their product if their product was defective and created a foreseeable risk of harm. It is very important that any product used in the preparation of food remains intact. Any product that has component parts that are likely to detach is arguably unsafe and defective in a major way. Consumers are not expecting that they may need to contend with small components transferring into their food. What follows are some of the ways that a grill brush may be defective.
- Defective Design: A grill brush may have a defective design that allows small pieces to come loose. An effective design would necessitate that the wire bristles remain completely intact, even if it is used vigorously or for an extended period of time.
- Manufacturing Defect: Liability for a defective brush may also extend to the manufacturer. If a product is poorly assembled, this could contribute to it falling apart over time.
- Failure to Warn: A grill brush could also be defective if it did not come with adequate warnings on the packaging. Companies must warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with the use of their products.
Companies that create defective consumer products will typically be held strictly liable for any resulting injuries. Under a strict liability claim, manufacturers can be responsible for a person’s injuries, even if they used a great deal of care to avoid harm. Depending on the facts of any case, there could be several different sources of potential liability for any defective consumer product. For example, a retail distributor may face liability if they were aware of a dangerous product in their inventory and failed to remove that product.
Preventing Consumer Products From Becoming Dangerous
Injuries involving defective consumer products are unfortunately quite common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2020, an estimated 28,535,000 people sought medical attention for an injury related to, but not necessarily caused by, a consumer product. This is a decrease of more than 7.7 million (21 percent) from the 2019 estimate. The 2020 age-adjusted rate of injury was 8.5 medically treated, consumer product-related injuries per 100 people in the U.S. resident population. The 2019 age-adjusted estimate was 10.9 per 100.” Companies should take several measures to protect consumers from being injured by their products.
- Testing: Companies should test their products and all of the ways that they will likely be used and even misused. This is particularly important for any product that contains small parts.
- Compliance: Companies should strictly adhere to all safety regulations related to consumer products.
- Recall: Companies should issue a recall of their product if they become aware of safety issues that may cause their product to become harmful.
Taking steps to ensure that consumer products are safe costs money. Unfortunately, many companies would rather deal with the occasional lawsuit than spend the money necessary to ensure that they are creating safe products. Another major issue is that certain products get imported from countries that may not have as rigorous safety standards. Any person harmed by a consumer product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
