Illinois State Police Investigating O’Fallon Semi-Truck Accident That Injured Construction Worker on Westbound Interstate 64 by Green Mount Road

O’FALLON, ILLINOIS (March 24, 2026) – A construction worker was injured in an O’Fallon semi-truck accident on Interstate 64 near Green Mount Road.
Saint Clair County officials are saying that the accident took place around noon on Tuesday. A semi-truck was traveling in the westbound lanes of the Interstate when it hit the construction worker for undetermined reasons.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim. He was transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.
The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for O’Fallon Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with an abundance of caution. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, “No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.” Multiple factors could contribute to any semi-truck accident.
- Truck accidents are more likely to recur in early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
- Truck accidents are more likely to occur if a truck driver does not get adequate rest.
- Truck accidents tend to involve younger and less experienced drivers.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a construction worker or other pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers are supposed to be particularly cautious when traveling through construction zones. Liability for any truck accident could extend beyond one particular driver who is deemed to be at fault. The entity that owned or operated a truck could also face responsibility for the crash.
Steps to Take After Illinois Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-trucks can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and are particularly dangerous for pedestrians and those in passenger vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “The number of injuries in large-truck crashes decreased 4.4% in 2023, to 153,452. As with deaths in large-truck crashes, most of the injuries occurred to occupants of other vehicles (70%), followed by truck occupants (27%) and non-occupants (3%). “Several actions should be taken after any truck accidents.
- The police should be called to the scene so that they can investigate.
- Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible.
- Any person that witnessed the collision should be interviewed early while the memories are fresh.
- Injured workers should contact an experienced personal injury attorney.
When a worker is injured in Illinois, they will typically have recourse through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help workers who are injured on the job. In addition to workers’ compensation, an injured worker may also be able to pursue damages from a third-party liability plan. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a workers’ employer contributed to an accident.
