SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS (March 29, 2026) – A worker identified as Daniel Crumrine has tragically died in a Springfield lawnmower accident at the Lincoln Greens Golf Course by Lake Springfield.

Springfield officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. A 51-year-old worker was riding a lawnmower when it was discovered that he was pinned underneath the mower.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help Daniel Crumrine. He was transported to a hospital in Springfield with critical injuries.

Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead roughly one hour after being admitted to the hospital. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Springfield Lawnmower Accidents

Employers in Illinois have a legal obligation to maintain work sites in a reasonably safe condition. According to 29 U.S.C. § 654(a)(1), “each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.” Many steps should be taken to protect workers from lawnmower accidents.

  • Riding lawn mowers should have seatbelts and rollover protection structures (ROPS).
  • Riding lawn mowers should be routinely inspected and well-maintained.
  • Workers that operate riding lawnmowers should be informed of the potential dangers posed by slopes and uneven terrain.
  • Employers should comply with all OSHA regulations related to the operation of lawn mowers.

When a worker is injured or killed on the job in Illinois, they or their surviving family members typically have recourse through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help injured workers. In addition to workers’ compensation, an injured worker or their family may also be able to pursue accountability through a third-party liability claim. For example, the company that manufactured a riding lawnmower could be liable for an accident if it lacked adequate safety features. In particular, rollover protection structures (ROPS) can help prevent most serious accidents involving lawnmowers.

Steps to Take After Springfield Lawn Mower Accidents

Accidents involving lawn mowers are actually relatively common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “an estimated 25,300 people are injured and 75 people are killed each year in riding lawnmower, lawn tractor, and garden tractor accidents. One out of every five of the deaths involves a young child.” Several steps should be taken after any accident involving a riding lawnmower.

  • Investigation: The circumstances surrounding the accident should be thoroughly investigated.
  • Medical Records: All medical records related to injuries should be sought.
  • Product Review: It should be determined if the lawnmower involved in the accident had any type of safety features like rollover protection structures.
  • Legal Review: The family of any worker who died should request a legal review of the accident by a team experienced in accident reconstruction and product liability claims.

It can be hard to know what to do after any lawnmower accident. In far too many instances, investigators often brush these events away as tragic and unforeseeable. But the fact of the matter is that many lawnmower accidents are due to preventable safety lapses. This could include safety lapses on the part of an employer. It could also include safety lapses on the part of a company that manufactured the lawnmower. The family of any person who died in a lawnmower accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil action.
