Driver Seriously Injured In Long Grove Semi-Truck Accident on Route 53

Lake County officials are saying that the accident took place around 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday. The driver of a box truck traveling north crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and hit a southbound semi-truck.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. A 49-year-old Dixon man was transported to the Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington with major injuries.

A passenger in the box truck was also taken to the hospital with critical injuries. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Long Grove Semi-Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in semi-truck accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2021, 5,700 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 18% increase from 2020 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 7% from 2020, and up 22% in the last 10 years.” There are many steps that drivers should take in order to avoid collisions with trucks and other vehicles.

  • All drivers should be well-rested before they head onto the road. Staying awake for only 18 hours straight can reduce a person’s ability to drive safely equal to driving with a BAC of 0.05%.
  • All drivers should check their blind spots before heading out onto the road. In particular, larger vehicles tend to have larger blind spots.
  • All drivers should maintain their vehicle at a safe speed at all times. Even driving the speed limit could be dangerous during periods of inclement weather.

Every driver is expected to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to (625 ILCS 5/11-701), “a vehicle shall be driven in the right-hand lane available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction.” If a driver crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and hits another vehicle head-on, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It can be hard to know where to begin after any truck accident. Victims may have high medical bills. They may also need to take significant periods of time off of work. It is important that accident victims remember that they do have rights. Any person that is injured in a semi-truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a bodily injury claim. A civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that often come with a serious injury.
