MATTESON, ILLINOIS (July 10, 2026) – An Amazon facility employee identified as Dylan Perkins has tragically died in a shooting at the facility involving a food delivery driver.

Cook County officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:54 PM on Sunday night. Dylan Perkins was at the facility when he and a co-worker had some type of argument with a food delivery driver.

The argument turned physical at some point before the food delivery driver allegedly produced a firearm and shot the victim. Paramedics were called to the scene of the incident to help him.

Dylan Perkins was transported to St. James Hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

It remains unclear if police have apprehended the suspect involved in the incident. However, police did put the Amazon facility on lockdown after the shooting.

This is not the first violent incident at this Amazon facility. A woman suffered some type of gunshot wound in 2024 after shots were fired in retaliation to some sort of prior altercation.

Liability for Shootings at Amazon Facilities

Employers in Illinois have a legal obligation to protect their workers from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. According to 29 U.S.C. § 654(a)(1), “each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.” This includes taking measures to protect employees from violence involving third parties. What follows are some of the measures employers can take to keep their workers safe.

  • Violence Prevention Plans: Employers should develop a site-specific violence prevention plan.
  • Facility Access: Employers should limit access to their facility through gated entry points, badges, and controlled doors.
  • Known Threats: Employers should do their best to prevent known threats from re-entering their facility.
  • Security Features: Employers should install adequate lighting and cameras in certain locations.

When a worker is harmed in Illinois, they or their surviving family members will typically have recourse through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no fault insurance scheme designed to help workers. In addition to workers’ compensation, injured workers and their surviving family members may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to any instance of harm.

Third-Party Liability for Workplace Violence in Illinois

Violence in the workplace has become an extremely common occurrence across Illinois and the United States. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 20,050 workers were injured in violent acts within the United States in the year 2020 alone. There were 392 instances of workplace homicide that same year. There could be multiple sources of third-party liability for any instance of gun violence in the workplace.

  • Security Contractor: A security contractor could be liable for third-party violence if they failed to employ reasonable measures to protect workers. When evaluating liability, it matters whether or not there is a history of violence and the particular location.
  • Food Delivery Companies: It is also possible that a food delivery company could be liable for any instance of violence if they knew that one of their workers was dangerous and failed to act.
  • Individual Perpetrators: The individual perpetrator of any crime can also be held civilly liable for their actions in addition to any criminal charges against them.

Violence in a workplace setting is often highly preventable. These incidents tend to involve situations where noteworthy security lapses are taking place. Unfortunately, corporations and their insurance providers are not likely to admit fault when someone is killed or seriously injured by their negligence. It is important for victims of violent crime to understand that they are protected by a number of laws. Among other things, they are able to seek some measure of accountability and transparency through a civil claim.
