Liability for Chicago Gas Station Shootings

Property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. They must protect guests from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting them from the criminal activity of third parties. There are several steps that property owners should take to protect guests from shootings and other crimes.

  • Property owners should ensure that their premises are well illuminated.
  • Property owners should ensure that there are surveillance cameras around the premises.
  • Property owners may need to hire security guards.
  • Property owners may need fences, gates, or other security measures.

When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. The level of security that any property owner will need depends heavily on where their properties are located. It also matters whether or not there is a history of crime at the location or in the surrounding area.

Steps to Take After Chicago Gas Station Shooting s

Gun violence remains an all too common occurrence across Chicago and Illinois. According to the City of Chicago, “Chicago experiences devastating levels of violence, and this has been especially true since 2016. From January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2020, 3,276 people were killed. There have been 13,546 non-fatal shooting victims, and 101 domestic-related homicides.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any crime at a gas station.

  • Victims should seek medical support as early as possible.
  • All surveillance footage that may have captured the incident should be reviewed.
  • The police should be called to the scene so that they can investigate.
  • Any crime victim should seek the guidance of an experienced Chicago personal injury attorney.

Crimes may seem like a random occurrence. But the fact of the matter is that many crimes at certain locations are predictable. They are the inevitable consequences of loose security measures. Unfortunately, property owners will virtually never accept responsibility if someone is seriously injured or killed on the premises. This is why it is so important these incidents are thoroughly investigated by an outside party.
