Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales Recalled Because They Can Pose Hazard to Children Due to Lithium Coin Batteries
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (February 23, 2025) – Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales have been recalled because they can pose a hazard to children and violate federal safety regulations.
The recall was issued on January 30, 2025. Around 349,500 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the scales violate federal regulations for consumer products. In particular, they contain button cell or coin batteries that can easily be accessed by children.
If a child were to swallow these batteries, they could be seriously injured by internal chemical burns and death. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales were sold at numerous retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, and Greater Goods.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Coin Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious hazard to children. Small coin batteries can be particularly dangerous due to their potential of being ingested. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Button cell or coin batteries are associated with thousands [of] emergency department visits every year. The consequences of a child swallowing a battery can be immediate, devastating and deadly. A button cell battery can burn through a child’s throat or esophagus in as little as two hours if swallowed.” There are a number of injuries associated with swallowing button cell or coin batteries.
- Tissue burns
- Perforation of the esophagus
- Choking
- Internal bleeding
Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must comply with all federal regulations for consumer products with coin batteries. The products must have child-resistant packaging. If a product does not have child-resistant packaging or other necessary safety features, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.
- It should be determined if the product involved was part of any recall.
- Medical records related to the incident should be collected.
- The product involved in the incident should be preserved.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
It can be hard to know what to do if your child has been injured by a consumer product. Injuries involving coin and button cell batteries can often cause lasting trauma. Sadly, though, companies that make products that injure children will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility for what took place. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
