Hector Santiago-Cardona Killed In Urbana Semi-Truck Accident

URBANA, ILLINOIS (September 12, 2025) – A 35-year-old motorcyclist identified as Hector Santiago-Cardona was killed in an Urbana semi-truck accident on Interstate 74.

Champaign County officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:57 p.m. on Wednesday. Hector Santiago-Cardona was traveling down the Interstate near another motorcyclist when a 37-year-old semi-truck driver made an abrupt left turn in front of their vehicles.

This caused a collision between the motorcycles and the semi-truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims.

Hector Santiago-Cardona was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite life-saving measures, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other motorcyclist sustained more moderate injuries and was later released from the hospital. Authorities issued a citation against the semi-truck driver for failing to yield while turning left.

A full investigation into the Urbana semi-truck accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Urbana Semi-Truck Accidents

Semi-truck drivers are required to get a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They are expected to be intimately familiar with their vehicle and operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. Despite this, many accidents are caused by semi-truck drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-801, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left must first yield the right-of-way to any driver that is close enough to pose a hazard. Truck drivers may have acted negligently in many different ways prior to a collision.

  • Blind Spots: Like most large commercial vehicles, trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles. Truck drivers may have failed to check their blind spots before making a turn at an intersection.
  • Speed: A truck driver may have been traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. Drivers are much more likely to make critical mistakes when they are speeding.
  • Distractions: Truck drivers may have been distracted by their cellphones or other devices. A large portion of truck accidents involve distracted drivers.

The vast majority of truck accidents are preventable. They tend to involve situations where truck drivers violate safety regulations. When a truck driver fails to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic prior to a collision, their employer could potentially be held at fault. In general, employers are liable for the wrongful conduct of their drivers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties. This could include instances where a truck driver was delivering goods on an official trip.

Preventing Urbana Truck Accidents

Commercial trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionately high number of fatal collisions. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,354 people died in large truck crashes in 2023. Sixteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 65% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 17% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” Several measures should be taken to prevent truck accidents across Illinois.

  • Training: Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers are properly licensed and have plenty of training. They should avoid sending less experienced truck drivers on difficult routes.
  • Maintenance: Truck companies should ensure that all of their vehicles are routinely inspected and well maintained. Trucks have a high utilization rate and are more prone to breaking down if they are not maintained properly.
  • Enforcement: Truck drivers must abide by certain safety regulations. For example, they cannot work more than 14 hours in a given period. Companies that employ truck drivers must ensure that they are following all of the rules.

Preventing truck accidents requires a coordinated effort between truck drivers and their carriers. But in far too many situations, truck drivers are pushed to complete their routes on unrealistic timelines. This can lead to them becoming dangerously fatigued. Nearly one in ten truck drivers involved in a fatal crash reported feeling under pressure from their carrier. It is important that victims of truck accidents understand that they do have legal rights.
