CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 26, 2026) –  A 26-year-old woman identified as Johanna Gregory has tragically died in a boat collision near Chicago’s Monroe Harbor.

Cook County officials are saying that the incident took place around 11:30 PM on Thursday night. Two boats that were carrying a combined total of 14 people were involved in a collision.

The force of the impact caused one of the boats to end up on another boat. Johanna Gregory was identified as the person killed in the collision.

Four people were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another nine people declined medical attention. The boats described in the collision were both large.

One investigator said that they were between 38 feet and 42 feet. The circumstances leading up to the deadly crash that killed Johanna Gregory remain unknown at this time.

Liability for Chicago Boat Accidents

Boat operators have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with other vessels ahead of them. Pursuant to 625 ILCS 45/5-1, “No person shall operate any watercraft in a careless or heedless manner so as to endanger any person or property or at a rate of speed greater than will permit him in the exercise of reasonable care to bring the watercraft to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead.” There are several factors that could contribute to any boat collision.

  • Speed: Boat operators are much more likely to lose control of their vessel if they are operating at an excessive speed.

  • Experience: Boat operators are much more likely to be involved in a collision if they are inexperienced.

  • Weather: Operating a boat safely can be difficult in ideal weather conditions. Contending with poor weather conditions is another factor that makes boat accidents more likely.

If a boat operator fails to follow navigation rules and collides with another vessel, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. A good boat operator must keep a proper lookout at all times and slow down to avoid colliding with other vessels. They could also change their course to prevent the path of their boat from intersecting that of another vessel. There could be several sources of liability for a boat collision, including the company that rented out a boat. A boat rental service could be liable for a collision under the legal theory of negligent entrustment if the operator was unqualified to take possession of the boat.

Preserving Evidence After Boat Collisions

Boats can be unsafe in many different settings if safety regulations are not being followed. According to the United States Coast Guard, “In calendar year 2024, the Coast Guard verified 3,887 incidents that involved 556 deaths, 2,170 injuries and approximately $88 million of damage to property as a result of recreational boating incidents.” It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any boat collision.

  • Police Report: Any accident report created by the Coast Guard should be carefully reviewed. It can help reveal what may have led up to a crash.

  • Boat Owner: The owner of the boat and all operators should be identified. In many cases, larger boats are leased from nearby rental services.

  • Eyewitnesses: Any person who may have witnessed the collision should be interviewed as early as possible while their memories are still fresh.

  • Boat: The boat involved in the collision and all physical evidence related to the crash should be carefully reviewed. In many cases, malfunctions with the boat may have contributed to what happened.

Boat accidents are highly complex events. The factors that contribute to any specific collision can take place many hours or weeks beforehand. Determining exactly how any crash took place is often beyond the scope and ability of law enforcement. This is particularly true if mechanical issues with the boat contribute to what happened. The family of any person who died in a boat accident is able to receive a free, independent investigation into the collision by a legal team experienced in accident reconstruction.
